Direct access hygienist: how does it work?

Under direct access, the hygienist can remove staining, tartar, plaque, bacterial deposits and other debris and provide you with oral hygiene advice. The hygienist can also advise you on the progression of gum disease, however, more advanced conditions would need to be assessed by a dentist. After seeing your dentist the hygienist would then be able continue oral hygiene treatment under your dentist’s prescription.

The hygienist is legally only allowed to undertake treatment which is within the General Dental Council’s Scope of Practice. They cannot diagnose or give the prognosis (the likely outcome) of diseases such as decaying and broken teeth. The hygienist is not able to prescribe antibiotics, pain killers or any other drugs to alleviate symptoms.

The hygienist cannot proceed with treatment that is requested without a dentist’s prescription. The hygienist will have to ask you to see a dentist, although she may be able to carry out a routine scale and polish and provide you with oral health advice.

There can be clinical circumstances when the hygienist would not be able to treat you at all. If this were to happen, the hygienist would ask you to see a dentist for an assessment and a written letter from the dentist before she could treat you. These circumstances could be related to your medical history and general health or the condition of your mouth.

If our hygienist feels that you do need to see a dentist or if she needs a prescription to treat you, then you can make a separate appointment at Portner Pittack to see one of our experienced dental practitioners.

Additional fees will apply if you need to see a dentist.

Visits to a hygienist are not a substitute for a full dental examination.
